Florence and Robin are currently immersed in fertility charts, thermometers, and ovulation kits. Like many other young couples, they are trying to have a baby. The only difference is that Florence and Robin are lesbians. This frank program follows their extraordinary journey towards parenthood in a land of extreme attitudes toward lesbianism, from a sperm bank run by lesbians for lesbians in San Francisco to the traditionalism of Virginia, where a lesbian mother recently lost custody of her son. Florence Spalding (the partner trying to conceive) and Robin Ruotolo give a unique insight into their struggle in a world which considers them abnormal. The program also meets the children of lesbian and gay couples and talks to pupils at a nursery school where one in six has gay parents. Most children of the "Gayby Boom" are under six years old; there is no certain knowledge of how their lives will develop, and expert opinion varies. Most homosexuals come from heterosexual families.
