Victory Is Your Duty: Boxing as a Policy Tool in Cuba

For decades, boxing has held a special place of honor in Cuban society—not least because Fidel Castro deployed the nation’s athletes as an unconventional tool of foreign and domestic policy. This Wide Angle report goes inside the Havana Boxing Academy—the first time a foreign film crew has been permitted—to follow future Olympians, hand-picked from the age of nine, as they fight their way into shape to become the standard bearers of la Revolución. Their journey to the national championships reveals that victory is not just their hope; it is their duty. In addition, Andy Gomez, Senior Fellow at the University of Miami’s Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies, speaks with Daljit Dhaliwal about Cuba’s post-Fidel era and the future of U.S./Cuban relations. (57 minutes)
